Set limits at sign-up

UK-licensed operators must offer deposit limits. Set one when you open an account, before any bet, and set it for the week or month rather than the day. Lowering a limit takes effect straight away; raising it involves a cooling-off wait.

Reality checks and history

Reality checks pop up after a set time to show how long you have played and what you have spent. Your account history shows deposits, withdrawals and net position; look at it monthly.

Time-outs

A time-out locks your account for a short period, from 24 hours up to six weeks, at one operator. Use it when you want a break, not a permanent stop.

Self-exclusion and GAMSTOP

Self-exclusion with one operator lasts at least six months. GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) does the same across every UK-licensed online operator at once, for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years, and it is free.

Blocks outside the site

Many UK banks and card providers let you block gambling payments in their app. Blocking software on your phone and computer stops gambling sites from loading at all.

Talk to someone

The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab), is free and open 24 hours on 0808 8020 133. Gambling Therapy (opens in a new tab) offers support online, and NHS gambling clinics accept self-referrals.
